           Windmillornowindmill,hesaid,lifewouldgoonasithadalwaysgoneonthatis,badly. 

           Apartfromthedisputesoverthewindmill,therewasthequestionofthedefenceofthefarm. ItwasfullyrealisedthatthoughthehumanbeingshadbeendefeatedintheBattleoftheCowshedtheymightmakeanotherandmoredeterminedattempttorecapturethefarmandreinstateMr.Jones. Theyhadallthemorereasonfordoingsobecausethenewsoftheirdefeathadspreadacrossthecountrysideandmadetheanimalsontheneighbouringfarmsmorerestivethanever. Asusual,SnowballandNapoleonwereindisagreement. AccordingtoNapoleon,whattheanimalsmustdowastoprocurefirearmsandtrainthemselvesintheuseofthem. AccordingtoSnowball,theymustsendoutmoreandmorepigeonsandstiruprebellionamongtheanimalsontheotherfarms. Theonearguedthatiftheycouldnotdefendthemselvestheywereboundtobeconquered,theotherarguedthatifrebellionshappenedeverywheretheywouldhavenoneedtodefendthemselves. TheanimalslistenedfirsttoNapoleon,thentoSnowball,andcouldnotmakeuptheirmindswhichwasright;indeed,theyalwaysfoundthemselvesinagreementwiththeonewhowasspeakingatthemoment. 

           AtlastthedaycamewhenSnowball’splanswerecompleted. AttheMeetingonthefollowingSundaythequestionofwhetherornottobeginworkonthewindmillwastobeputtothevote. Whentheanimalshadassembledinthebigbarn,Snowballstoodupand,thoughoccasionallyinterruptedbybleatingfromthesheep,setforthhisreasonsforadvocatingthebuildingofthewindmill. ThenNapoleonstooduptoreply. Hesaidveryquietlythatthewindmillwasnonsenseandthatheadvisednobodytovoteforit,andpromptlysatdownagain;hehadspokenforbarelythirtyseconds,andseemedalmostindifferentastotheeffectheproduced.
