           ThismessagefrightenedMarillawholesomely.ShereadAnne’sdeathwarrantbyconsumptioninitunlessitwasscrupulouslyobeyed.Asaresult,Annehadthegoldensummerofherlifeasfarasfreedomandfrolicwent.Shewalked,rowed,berried,anddreamedtoherheart’scontent;andwhenSeptembercameshewasbright-eyedandalert,withastepthatwouldhavesatisfiedtheSpencervaledoctorandaheartfullofambitionandzestoncemore.

           “Ifeeljustlikestudyingwithmightandmain,”shedeclaredasshebroughtherbooksdownfromtheattic.“Oh,yougoodoldfriends,I’mgladtoseeyourhonestfacesoncemore—yes,evenyou,geometry.I’vehadaperfectlybeautifulsummer,Marilla,andnowI’mrejoicingasastrongmantorunarace,asMr.AllansaidlastSunday.Doesn’tMr.Allanpreachmagnificentsermons?Mrs.
