           Matthewwashavingabadtenminutesofit.Hehadcomeintothekitchen,inthetwilightofacold,grayDecemberevening,andhadsatdowninthewoodboxcornertotakeoffhisheavyboots,unconsciousofthefactthatAnneandabevyofherschoolmateswerehavingapracticeof“TheFairyQueen”inthesittingroom.Presentlytheycametroopingthroughthehallandoutintothekitchen,laughingandchatteringgaily.TheydidnotseeMatthew,whoshrankbashfullybackintotheshadowsbeyondthewoodboxwithabootinonehandandabootjackintheother,andhewatchedthemshylyfortheaforesaidtenminutesastheyputoncapsandjacketsandtalkedaboutthedialogueandtheconcert.Annestoodamongthem,brighteyedandanimatedasthey;butMatthewsuddenlybecameconsciousthattherewassomethingaboutherdifferentfromhermates.AndwhatworriedMatthewwasthatthedifferenceimpressedhimasbeingsomethingthatshouldnotexist.Annehadabrighterface,andbigger,starriereyes,andmoredelicatefeaturesthantheother;evenshy,unobservantMatthewhadlearnedtotakenoteofthesethings;butthedifferencethatdisturbedhimdidnotconsistinanyoftheserespects.Theninwhatdiditconsist?

           Matthewwashauntedbythisquestionlongafterthegirlshadgone,arminarm,downthelong,hard-frozenlaneandAnnehadbetakenherselftoherbooks.HecouldnotreferittoMarilla,who,hefelt,wouldbequitesuretosniffscornfullyandremarkthattheonlydifferenceshesawbetweenAnneandtheothergirlswasthattheysometimeskepttheirtonguesquietwhileAnneneverdid.
