           ItwasOctoberagainwhenAnnewasreadytogobacktoschool—agloriousOctober,allredandgold,withmellowmorningswhenthevalleyswerefilledwithdelicatemistsasifthespiritofautumnhadpouredtheminforthesuntodrain—amethyst,pearl,silver,rose,andsmoke-blue.Thedewsweresoheavythatthefieldsglistenedlikeclothofsilverandthereweresuchheapsofrustlingleavesinthehollowsofmany-stemmedwoodstoruncrisplythrough.TheBirchPathwasacanopyofyellowandthefernsweresearandbrownallalongit.Therewasatangintheveryairthatinspiredtheheartsofsmallmaidenstripping,unlikesnails,swiftlyandwillinglytoschool;anditwasjollytobebackagainatthelittlebrowndeskbesideDiana,withRubyGillisnoddingacrosstheaisleandCarrieSloanesendingupnotesandJuliaBellpassinga“chew”ofgumdownfromthebackseat.Annedrewalongbreathofhappinessasshesharpenedherpencilandarrangedherpicturecardsinherdesk.Lifewascertainlyveryinteresting.

           Inthenewteachershefoundanothertrueandhelpfulfriend.MissStacywasabright,sympatheticyoungwomanwiththehappygiftofwinningandholdingtheaffectionsofherpupilsandbringingoutthebestthatwasinthemmentallyandmorally.AnneexpandedlikeaflowerunderthiswholesomeinfluenceandcarriedhometotheadmiringMatthewandthecriticalMarillaglowingaccountsofschoolworkandaims.
