           Annesweptbydisdainfully,withoutlookorsignofhearing.“Ohhowcouldyou,Anne?”breathedDianaastheywentdowntheroadhalfreproachfully,halfadmiringly.DianafeltthatshecouldneverhaveresistedGilbert’splea.

           “IshallneverforgiveGilbertBlythe,”saidAnnefirmly.“AndMr.Phillipsspelledmynamewithoutane,too.Theironhasenteredintomysoul,Diana.”

           Dianahadn’ttheleastideawhatAnnemeantbutsheunderstooditwassomethingterrible.

           “Youmustn’tmindGilbertmakingfunofyourhair,”shesaidsoothingly.“Why,hemakesfunofallthegirls.Helaughsatminebecauseit’ssoblack.He’scalledmeacrowadozentimes;andIneverheardhimapologizeforanythingbefore,either.”

           “There’sagreatdealofdifferencebetweenbeingcalledacrowandbeingcalledcarrots,”saidAnnewithdignity.“GilbertBlythehashurtmyfeelingsexcruciatingly,Diana.”

           Itispossiblethemattermighthaveblownoverwithoutmoreexcruciationifnothingelsehadhappened.Butwhenthingsbegintohappentheyareapttokeepon.
