           Allnightlongpianosjangledfrombehinddrawnshadesandrowdysongsandlaughterfloatedout,punctuatedbyoccasionalscreamsandpistolshots.Theinmatesofthesehouseswerebolderthantheprostitutesofthewardaysandbrazenlyhungoutoftheirwindowsandcalledtopassers-by.AndonSundayafternoons,thehandsomeclosedcarriagesofthemadamsofthedistrictrolleddownthemainstreets,filledwithgirlsintheirbestfinery,takingtheairfrombehindloweredsilkshades.

           BelleWatlingwasthemostnotoriousofthemadams.Shehadopenedanewhouseofherown,alargetwo-storybuildingthatmadeneighboringhousesinthedistrictlooklikeshabbyrabbitwarrens.Therewasalongbarroomdownstairs,elegantlyhungwithoilpaintings,andanegroorchestraplayedeverynight.Theupstairs,sorumorsaid,wasfittedoutwiththefinestofplushupholsteredfurniture,heavylacecurtainsandimportedmirrorsingiltframes.Thedozenyoungladieswithwhomthehousewasfurnishedwerecomely,ifbrightlypainted,andcomportedthemselvesmorequietlythanthoseofotherhouses.Atleast,thepolicewereseldomsummonedtoBelle’s.

           ThishousewassomethingthatthematronsofAtlantawhisperedaboutfurtivelyandministerspreachedagainstinguardedtermsasacesspoolofiniquity,ahissingandareproach.EveryoneknewthatawomanofBelle’stypecouldn’thavemadeenoughmoneybyherselftosetupsuchaluxuriousestablishment.Shehadtohaveabackerandarichoneatthat.
