           MeadewasupstairswithPhil,waitingherhusband’sreturn,andMelaniesatintheparlor,talkinginalowvoicetoagroupofsympatheticneighbors.Shewasbusywithneedleandscissors,alteringamourningdressthatMrs.ElsinghadlenttoMrs.Meade.Alreadythehousewasfulloftheacridsmellofclothesboilinginhomemadeblackdyefor,inthekitchen,thesobbingcookwasstirringallofMrs.Meade’sdressesinthehugewashpot.

           "Howisshe?"questionedScarlettsoftly.

           "Notatear,"saidMelanie."It’sterriblewhenwomencan’tcry.Idon’tknowhowmenstandthingswithoutcrying.Iguessit’sbecausethey’restrongerandbraverthanwomen.Shesaysshe’sgoingtoPennsylvaniabyherselftobringhimhome.Thedoctorcan’tleavethehospital."
