           ScarlettturnedawayfromMammywithstudiednonchalance,thankfulthatherfacehadbeenunnoticedinMammy’spreoccupationwiththematteroftheshawl. 

           "No,Iwanttosithereandwatchthesunset. It’ssopretty. Yourungetmyshawl.Please,Mammy,andI’llsitheretillPacomeshome." 

           "Yo’voicesoun’lakyoucatchin’acole,"saidMammysuspiciously. 

           "Well,I’mnot,"saidScarlettimpatiently. "Youfetchmemyshawl." 

           MammywaddledbackintothehallandScarlettheardhercallsoftlyupthestairwelltotheupstairsmaid. 

           "You,Rosa!DrapmeMissScarlett’sshawl."Then,moreloudly:"Wuthlessnigger!Sheain’neverwharshedoesnobodynogood.Now,Ahgotterclimbupan’gititmahseff." 

           Scarlettheardthestairsgroanandshegotsoftlytoherfeet. WhenMammyreturnedshewouldresumeherlectureonScarlett’sbreachofhospitality,andScarlettfeltthatshecouldnotendurepratingaboutsuchatrivialmatterwhenherheartwasbreaking. Asshestood,hesitant,wonderingwhereshecouldhideuntiltheacheinherbreastsubsidedalittle,athoughtcametoher,bringingasmallrayofhope.
