Nineteenyearsold,sixfeettwoinchestall,longofboneandhardofmuscle,withsunburnedfacesanddeepauburnhair,theireyesmerryandarrogant,theirbodiesclothedinidenticalbluecoatsandmustard-coloredbreeches,theywereasmuchalikeastwobollsofcotton.
Outside,thelateafternoonsunslanteddownintheyard,throwingintogleamingbrightnessthedogwoodtreesthatweresolidmassesofwhiteblossomsagainstthebackgroundofnewgreen. Thetwins’horseswerehitchedinthedriveway,biganimals,redastheirmasters’hair; andaroundthehorses’legsquarreledthepackoflean,nervouspossumhoundsthataccompaniedStuartandBrentwherevertheywent. Alittlealoof,asbecameanaristocrat,layablack-spottedcarriagedog,muzzleonpaws,patientlywaitingfortheboystogohometosupper.
Betweenthehoundsandthehorsesandthetwinstherewasakinshipdeeperthanthatoftheirconstantcompanionship. Theywereallhealthy,thoughtlessyounganimals,sleek,graceful,high-spirited,theboysasmettlesomeasthehorsestheyrode,mettlesomeanddangerousbut,withal,sweet-temperedtothosewhoknewhowtohandlethem.
Althoughborntotheeaseofplantationlife,waitedonhandandfootsinceinfancy,thefacesofthethreeontheporchwereneitherslacknorsoft. Theyhadthevigorandalertnessofcountrypeoplewhohavespentalltheirlivesintheopenandtroubledtheirheadsverylittlewithdullthingsinbooks.
