           ThepeoplewhosettledthetowncalledsuccessivelyTerminus,MarthasvilleandAtlanta,wereapushypeople.Restless,energeticpeoplefromtheoldersectionsofGeorgiaandfrommoredistantstatesweredrawntothistownthatsprawleditselfaroundthejunctionoftherailroadsinitscenter.Theycamewithenthusiasm.Theybuilttheirstoresaroundthefivemuddyredroadsthatcrossednearthedepot.TheybuilttheirfinehomesonWhitehallandWashingtonstreetsandalongthehighridgeoflandonwhichcountlessgenerationsofmoccasinedIndianfeethadbeatenapathcalledthePeachtreeTrail.Theywereproudoftheplace,proudofitsgrowth,proudofthemselvesformakingitgrow.LettheoldertownscallAtlantaanythingtheypleased.Atlantadidnotcare.

           ScarletthadalwayslikedAtlantafortheverysamereasonsthatmadeSavannah,AugustaandMaconcondemnit.Likeherself,thetownwasamixtureoftheoldandnewinGeorgia,inwhichtheoldoftencameoffsecondbestinitsconflictswiththeself-willedandvigorousnew.Moreover,therewassomethingpersonal,excitingaboutatownthatwasbornoratleastchristenedthesameyearshewaschristened.

           Thenightbeforehadbeenwildandwetwithrain,butwhenScarlettarrivedinAtlantaawarmsunwasatwork,bravelyattemptingtodrythestreetsthatwerewindingriversofredmud.Intheopenspacearoundthedepot,thesoftgroundhadbeencutandchurnedbytheconstantflowoftrafficinandoutuntilitresembledanenormoushogwallow,andhereandtherevehiclesweremiredtothehubsintheruts.Anever-ceasinglineofarmywagonsandambulances,loadingandunloadingsuppliesandwoundedfromthetrains,madethemudandconfusionworseastheytoiledinandstruggledout,driversswearing,mulesplungingandmudspatteringforyards.
