           Therewaspridetoo,mingledwiththeelationandjoy,pridethatGeorgiawasbackinthehandsofherownpeopleagain,inspiteofalltheadministrationinWashingtoncoulddo,inspiteofthearmy,theCarpetbaggers,theScallawagsandthenativeRepublicans.

           SeventimesCongresshadpassedcrushingactsagainstthestatetokeepitaconqueredprovince,threetimesthearmyhadsetasidecivillaw.Thenegroeshadfrolickedthroughthelegislature,graspingalienshadmismanagedthegovernment,privateindividualshadenrichedthemselvesfrompublicfunds.Georgiahadbeenhelpless,tormented,abused,hammereddown.Butnow,inspiteofthemall,Georgiabelongedtoherselfagainandthroughtheeffortsofherownpeople.

           ThesuddenoverturnoftheRepublicansdidnotbringjoytoeveryone.TherewasconsternationintheranksoftheScallawags,theCarpetbaggersandtheRepublicans.TheGelertsandHundons,evidentlyapprisedofBullock’sdeparturebeforehisresignationbecamepublic,lefttownabruptly,disappearingintothatoblivionfromwhichtheyhadcome.TheotherCarpetbaggersandScallawagswhoremainedwereuncertain,frightened,andtheyhoveredtogetherforcomfort,wonderingwhatthelegislativeinvestigationwouldbringtolightconcerningtheirownprivateaffairs.Theywerenotinsolentnow.Theywerestunned,bewildered,afraid.AndtheladieswhocalledonScarlettsaidoverandover:

           "Butwhowouldhavethoughtitwouldturnoutthisway?Wethoughtthegovernorwastoopowerful.Wethoughthewasheretostay.
