TheGoosesearchedasearnestlyastheothers,forifhecoulddiscoverit,hemeanttohideitwheretheWizardcouldneverfindit,becauseiftheWizardchangedhimbacktohisproperform,alongwiththeothers,hewouldthenberecognizedasRuggedotheNome,andtheywouldsendhimoutoftheLandofOzandsoruinallhishopesofconquest.
Ruggedowasnotreallysorry,nowthathethoughtaboutit,thatKikihadtransformedalltheseOzfolks.Theforestbeasts,itwastrue,hadbeensofrightenedthattheywouldnowneverconsenttobetransformedintomen,butKikicouldtransformthemagainsttheirwill,andoncetheywereallinhumanforms,itwouldnotbeimpossibletoinducethemtoconquertheOzpeople.
Soallwasnotlost,thoughttheoldNome,andthebestthingforhimtodowastorejointheHyupboywhohadthesecretofthetransformations.So,havingmadesuretheWizard’sblackbagwasnotintheclearing,theGoosewanderedawaythroughthetreeswhentheotherswerenotlooking,andwhenoutoftheirhearing,hebegancalling,"KikiAru!KikiAru!Quack—quack!KikiAru!"
TheBoyandtheWoman,theFox,theLamb,andtheRabbit,notbeingabletofindthebag,wentbacktotherock,allfeelingexceedinglystrange.
"Where’stheGoose?"askedtheWizard.
"Hemusthaverunaway,"repliedDorothy."Iwonderwhohewas?"
"Ithink,"saidGugutheKing,whowasthefatWoman,"thattheGoosewasthestrangerwhoproposedthatwemakewarupontheOzpeople.
