KikiAru,whohadremainedunnoticedintheshadowoftherock,wasatfirstmorealarmedbythecomingofthestrangersthanevenRuggedowas,andtheboytoldhimselfthatunlessheactedquicklyandwithoutwaitingtoasktheadviceoftheoldNome,theirconspiracywaslikelytobediscoveredandalltheirplanstoconquerandruleOzbedefeated.Kikididn’tlikethewayRuggedoactedeither,fortheformerKingoftheNomeswantedtodoeverythinghisownway,andmadetheboy,whoalonepossessedthepoweroftransformations,obeyhisordersasifhewereaslave.
AnotherthingthatdisturbedKikiAruwasthefactthatarealWizardhadarrived,whowassaidtopossessmanymagicalpowers,andthisWizardcarriedhistoolsinablackbag,andwasthefriendoftheOzpeople,andsowouldprobablytrytopreventwarbetweenthebeastsoftheforestandthepeopleofOz.
AllthesethingspassedthroughthemindoftheHyupboywhiletheCowardlyLionandGugutheKingweretalkingtogether,andthatwaswhyhenowbegantodoseveralstrangethings.
Hehadfoundaplace,neartothepointwherehestood,wheretherewasadeephollowintherock,soheputhisfaceintothishollowandwhisperedsoftly,sohewouldnotbeheard:
"IwanttheWizardofOztobecomeafox—Pyrzqxgl!"
TheWizard,whohadstoodsmilinglybesidehisfriends,suddenlyfelthisformchangetothatofafox,andhisblackbagfelltotheground.
