           Thisfairylandissobig,however,thatallofitisnotyetknowntoitsgirlRuler,anditissaidthatinsomefarpartsofthecountry,inforestsandmountainfastnesses,inhiddenvalleysandthickjungles,arepeopleandbeaststhatknowaslittleaboutOzmaassheknowsofthem.Still,theseunknownsubjectsarenotnearlysonumerousastheknowninhabitantsofOz,whooccupyallthecountriesneartotheEmeraldCity.Indeed,I’msureitwillnotbelonguntilallpartsofthefairylandofOzareexploredandtheirpeoplesmadeacquaintedwiththeirRuler,forinOzma’spalaceareseveralofherfriendswhoaresocuriousthattheyareconstantlydiscoveringnewandextraordinaryplacesandinhabitants.

           OneofthemostfrequentdiscoverersofthesehiddenplacesinOzisalittleKansasgirlnamedDorothy,whoisOzma’sdearestfriendandlivesinluxuriousroomsintheRoyalPalace.Dorothyis,indeed,aPrincessofOz,butshedoesnotliketobecalledaprincess,andbecausesheissimpleandsweetanddoesnotpretendtobeanythingbutanordinarylittlegirl,sheiscalledjust"Dorothy"byeverybodyandisthemostpopularperson,nexttoOzma,inalltheLandofOz.

           OnemorningDorothycrossedthehallofthepalaceandknockedonthedoorofanothergirlnamedTrot,alsoaguestandfriendofOzma.
