           "Webetterlieupsomeplacetillit’sdark.Ifwecouldgetsouthwe’dbeallright."

           "They’dhavetoshootusalltoprovetheywererightthefirsttime,"Bonellosaid."I’mnotgoingtotrythem."

           "We’llfindaplacetolieupasneartoUdineaswecangetandthengothroughwhenit’sdark."

           "Let’sgothen,"Bonellosaid.Wewentdownthenorthsideoftheembankment.Ilookedback.Aymolayinthemudwiththeangleoftheembankment.Hewasquitesmallandhisarmswerebyhisside,hisputtee-wrappedlegsandmuddybootstogether,hiscapoverhisface.Helookedverydead.Itwasraining.IhadlikedhimaswellasanyoneIeverknew.Ihadhispapersinmypocketandwouldwritetohisfamily.Aheadacrossthefieldswasafarmhouse.Thereweretreesarounditandthefarmbuildingswerebuiltagainstthehouse.Therewasabalconyalongthesecondfloorheldupbycolumns.

           "Webetterkeepalittlewayapart,"Isaid."I’llgoahead."Istartedtowardthefarmhouse.Therewasapathacrossthefield.
