           Therewasabigemptytwo-wheeledcart,theshaftstippedhighupintherain.Icametothecourtyard,crossedit,andstoodundertheshelterofthebalcony.ThedoorofthehousewasopenandIwentin.BonelloandPianicameinafterme.Itwasdarkinside.Iwentbacktothekitchen.Therewereashesofafireonthebigopenhearth.Thepotshungovertheashes,buttheywereempty.IlookedaroundbutIcouldnotfindanythingtoeat.

           "Weoughttolieupinthebarn,"Isaid."Doyouthinkyoucouldfindanythingtoeat,Piani,andbringitupthere?"

           "I’lllook,"Pianisaid.

           "I’lllooktoo,"Bonellosaid.

           "Allright,"Isaid."I’llgoupandlookatthebarn."Ifoundastonestairwaythatwentupfromthestableunderneath.Thestablesmeltdryandpleasantintherain.Thecattlewereallgone,probablydrivenoffwhentheyleft.Thebarnwashalffullofhay.Thereweretwowindowsintheroof,onewasblockedwithboards,theotherwasanarrowdormerwindowonthenorthside.Therewasachutesothathaymightbepitcheddowntothecattle.Beamscrossedtheopeningdownintothemainfloorwherethehay-cartsdroveinwhenthehaywashauledintobepitchedup.Iheardtherainontheroofandsmelledthehayand,whenIwentdown,thecleansmellofdrieddunginthestable.Wecouldpryaboardlooseandseeoutofthesouthwindowdownintothecourtyard.Theotherwindowlookedoutonthefieldtowardthenorth.
