           Withthesecondactshebegantogivemoreattentiontothedevelopmentoftheplay,thoughherinterestwasexcitedratherbywhatshecalled“thestory”thanbytheconflictofcharacterproducingit.Oddlycombinedwithhersharpapprehensionofthingstheatrical,herknowledgeoftechnical“dodges”andgreen-roomprecedents,herglibnessabout“lines”and“curtains”,wastheprimitivesimplicityofherattitudetowardthetaleitself,astowardsomethingthatwas“reallyhappening”andatwhichoneassistedasatastreet-accidentoraquarreloverheardinthenextroom.ShewantedtoknowifDarrowthoughtthelovers“reallywould”beinvolvedinthecatastrophethatthreatenedthem,andwhenheremindedherthathispredictionsweredisqualifiedbyhishavingalreadyseentheplay,sheexclaimed:“Oh,then,pleasedon’ttellmewhat’sgoingtohappen!”andthenextmomentwasquestioninghimaboutCerdine’stheatricalsituationandherprivatehistory.
