"Youmustnotfear,"saidhesoothingly,bendingforwardandpattingherforearm. "Weshallsoonsetmattersright,Ihavenodoubt. Youhavecomeinbytrainthismorning,Isee."

"No,butIobservethesecondhalfofareturnticketinthepalmofyourleftglove. Youmusthavestartedearly,andyetyouhadagooddriveinadog-cart,alongheavyroads,beforeyoureachedthestation."
Theladygaveaviolentstartandstaredinbewildermentatmycompanion.
"Thereisnomystery,mydearmadam,"saidhe,smiling. "Theleftarmofyourjacketisspatteredwithmudinnolessthansevenplaces. Themarksareperfectlyfresh. Thereisnovehiclesaveadog-cartwhichthrowsupmudinthatway,andthenonlywhenyousitontheleft-handsideofthedriver."
