Ofallthesevariedcases,however,Icannotrecallanywhichpresentedmoresingularfeaturesthanthatwhichwasassociatedwiththewell-knownSurreyfamilyoftheRoylottsofStokeMoran. TheeventsinquestionoccurredintheearlydaysofmyassociationwithHolmes,whenweweresharingroomsasbachelorsinBakerStreet. ItispossiblethatImighthaveplacedthemuponrecordbefore,butapromiseofsecrecywasmadeatthetime,fromwhichIhaveonlybeenfreedduringthelastmonthbytheuntimelydeathoftheladytowhomthepledgewasgiven. Itisperhapsaswellthatthefactsshouldnowcometolight,forIhavereasonstoknowthattherearewidespreadrumoursastothedeathofDr.GrimesbyRoylottwhichtendtomakethematterevenmoreterriblethanthetruth.
ItwasearlyinAprilintheyear’83thatIwokeonemorningtofindSherlockHolmesstanding,fullydressed,bythesideofmybed. Hewasalateriser,asarule,andastheclockonthemantelpieceshowedmethatitwasonlyaquarter-pastseven,Iblinkedupathiminsomesurprise,andperhapsjustalittleresentment,forIwasmyselfregularinmyhabits.
