           IhadnokeenerpleasurethaninfollowingHolmesinhisprofessionalinvestigations,andinadmiringtherapiddeductions,asswiftasintuitions,andyetalwaysfoundedonalogicalbasiswithwhichheunravelledtheproblemswhichweresubmittedtohim. Irapidlythrewonmyclothesandwasreadyinafewminutestoaccompanymyfrienddowntothesitting-room. Aladydressedinblackandheavilyveiled,whohadbeensittinginthewindow,roseasweentered. 

           "Good-morning,madam,"saidHolmescheerily. "MynameisSherlockHolmes. Thisismyintimatefriendandassociate,Dr.Watson,beforewhomyoucanspeakasfreelyasbeforemyself. Ha!IamgladtoseethatMrs.Hudsonhashadthegoodsensetolightthefire. Praydrawuptoit,andIshallorderyouacupofhotcoffee,forIobservethatyouareshivering." 

           "Itisnotcoldwhichmakesmeshiver,"saidthewomaninalowvoice,changingherseatasrequested. 

           "What,then?"
