YetallthismultitudewasnotcrowdingtotheBuytenhofwiththeinnocentviewofmerelyfeastingtheireyeswiththespectacle;thereweremanywhowenttheretoplayanactivepartinit,andtotakeuponthemselvesanofficewhichtheyconceivedhadbeenbadlyfilled,—thatoftheexecutioner.
Therewere,indeed,otherswithlesshostileintentions.Allthattheycaredforwasthespectacle,alwayssoattractivetothemob,whoseinstinctiveprideisflatteredbyit,—thesightofgreatnesshurleddownintothedust.
