           VanBaerle,assoonastheideahadoncetakenrootinhisclearandingeniousmind,beganslowlythenecessaryplantingandcross-breedingtoreducethetulipswhichhehadgrownalreadyfromredtobrown,andfrombrowntodarkbrown.

           Bythenextyearhehadobtainedflowersofaperfectnut-brown,andBoxtelespiedthemintheborder,whereashehadhimselfasyetonlysucceededinproducingthelightbrown.

           Itmightperhapsbeinterestingtoexplaintothegentlereaderthebeautifulchainoftheorieswhichgotoprovethatthetulipborrowsitscolorsfromtheelements;perhapsweshouldgivehimpleasureifweweretomaintainandestablishthatnothingisimpossibleforafloristwhoavailshimselfwithjudgmentanddiscretionandpatienceofthesun’sheat,theclearwater,thejuicesoftheearth,andthecoolbreezes.Butthisisnotatreatiseupontulipsingeneral;itisthestoryofoneparticulartulipwhichwehaveundertakentowrite,andtothatwelimitourselves,howeveralluringthesubjectwhichissocloselyalliedtoours.

           Boxtel,oncemoreworstedbythesuperiorityofhishatedrival,wasnowcompletelydisgustedwithtulip-growing,and,beingdrivenhalfmad,devotedhimselfentirelytoobservation.

           Thehouseofhisrivalwasquiteopentoview;agardenexposedtothesun;cabinetswithglasswalls,shelves,cupboards,boxes,andticketedpigeon-holes,whichcouldeasilybesurveyedbythetelescope.
