           Howoftenhadthemiserable,jealousmantoobserveinVanBaerle’sbedstulipswhichdazzledhimbytheirbeauty,andalmostchokedhimbytheirperfection!

           Andthen,afterthefirstblushoftheadmirationwhichhecouldnothelpfeeling,hebegantobetorturedbythepangsofenvy,bythatslowfeverwhichcreepsovertheheartandchangesitintoanestofvipers,eachdevouringtheotherandeverbornanew.HowoftendidBoxtel,inthemidstoftortureswhichnopenisablefullytodescribe,howoftendidhefeelaninclinationtojumpdownintothegardenduringthenight,todestroytheplants,totearthebulbswithhisteeth,andtosacrificetohiswraththeownerhimself,ifheshouldventuretostandupforthedefenceofhistulips!

           Buttokillatulipwasahorriblecrimeintheeyesofagenuinetulip-fancier;astokillingaman,itwouldnothavematteredsoverymuch.

           YetVanBaerlemadesuchprogressinthenoblescienceofgrowingtulips,whichheseemedtomasterwiththetrueinstinctofgenius,thatBoxtelatlastwasmaddenedtosuchadegreeastothinkofthrowingstonesandsticksintotheflower-standsofhisneighbour.But,rememberingthathewouldbesuretobefoundout,andthathewouldnotonlybepunishedbylaw,butalsodishonouredforeverinthefaceofallthetulip-growersofEurope,hehadrecoursetostratagem,and,togratifyhishatred,triedtodeviseaplanbymeansofwhichhemightgainhisendswithoutbeingcompromisedhimself.

           Heconsideredalongtime,andatlasthismeditationswerecrownedwithsuccess.
