           “Gate!gate!”criedavoicewhichseemedtobethatofamaninahurry.

           ThePrince,turninground,observedCaptainVanDeken.

           “Isthatyou,Captain?”hesaid.“YouarenotyetoutoftheHague?Thisisexecutingmyordersveryslowly.”

           “Monseigneur,”repliedtheCaptain,“thisisthethirdgateatwhichIhavepresentedmyself;theothertwowereclosed.”

           “Well,thisgoodmanwillopenthisoneforyou;doit,myfriend.”

           Thelastwordswereaddressedtothegatekeeper,whostoodquitethunderstruckonhearingCaptainVanDekenaddressingbythetitleofMonseigneurthispaleyoungman,towhomhehimselfhadspokeninsuchafamiliarway.

           Asitweretomakeupforhisfault,hehastenedtoopenthegate,whichswungcreakingonitshinges.
