Nothinghowever,ismoreficklethansucharesolutionofthepeople.Whenacrowdisonceinthehumourtocheer,itisjustthesameaswhenitbeginstohiss.Itneverknowswhentostop.
Ittherefore,inthefirstplace,cheeredVanSystensandhisnosegay,thenthecorporation,thenfollowedacheerforthepeople;and,atlast,andforoncewithgreatjustice,therewasonefortheexcellentmusicwithwhichthegentlemenofthetowncouncilsgenerouslytreatedtheassemblageateveryhalt.
Everyeyewaslookingeagerlyfortheheroineofthefestival,—thatistosay,theblacktulip,—andforitsherointhepersonoftheonewhohadgrownit.
IncasethisheroshouldmakehisappearanceaftertheaddresswehaveseenworthyVanSystensatworkonsoconscientiously,hewouldnotfailtomakeasmuchofasensationastheStadtholderhimself.
