           Atthismomentthenoiseinthesquarebelowwasheardtoroarwithincreasingfury.Tillywasparleyingwiththeburghers.

           “Well,well,”saidCornelius,“youareaveryskilfulpilot,John;butIdoubtwhetheryouwillassafelyguideyourbrotheroutoftheBuytenhofinthemidstofthisgale,andthroughtheragingsurfofpopularhatred,asyoudidthefleetofVanTromppasttheshoalsoftheScheldttoAntwerp.”

           “WiththehelpofGod,Cornelius,we’llatleasttry,”answeredJohn;“but,firstofall,awordwithyou.”

           “Speak!”

           Theshoutsbegananew.

           “Hark,hark!”continuedCornelius,“howangrythosepeopleare!Isitagainstyou,oragainstme?”

           “Ishouldsayitisagainstusboth,Cornelius.Itoldyou,mydearbrother,thattheOrangeparty,whileassailinguswiththeirabsurdcalumnies,havealsomadeitareproachagainstusthatwehavenegotiatedwithFrance.
