           “All’swell.”

           Atthethirdvisitoftheday,Corneliuschangedhisformerinquiry:

           “IhopenobodyisillatLoewestein?”

           “Nobody,”replied,evenmorelaconically,thejailer,shuttingthedoorbeforethenoseoftheprisoner.

           Gryphus,beinglittleusedtothissortofcivilityonthepartofCornelius,begantosuspectthathisprisonerwasabouttotryandbribehim.

           Corneliuswasnowaloneoncemore;itwasseveno’clockintheevening,andtheanxietyofyesterdayreturnedwithincreasedintensity.

           Butanothertimethehourspassedawaywithoutbringingthesweetvisionwhichlightedup,throughthegratedwindow,thecellofpoorCornelius,andwhich,inretiring,leftlightenoughinhishearttolastuntilitcamebackagain.

           VanBaerlepassedthenightinanagonyofdespair.
