But,threateningasitsounded,Corneliusappearednottodeemitworthhiswhiletoinquireafteritscause;nordidhegetuptolookoutofthenarrowgratedwindow,whichgaveaccesstothelightandtothenoiseoftheworldwithout.
Hewassoabsorbedinhisnever-ceasingpainthatithadalmostbecomeahabitwithhim.Hefeltwithsuchdelightthebondswhichconnectedhisimmortalbeingwithhisperishableframegraduallyloosening,thatitseemedtohimasifhisspirit,freedfromthetrammelsofthebody,werehoveringaboveit,liketheexpiringflamewhichrisesfromthehalf-extinguishedembers.
