ButRosa,whilstfallingdownsenseless,stillobeyingherfriend,hadpressedherhandonhervelvetbodiceand,forgettingeverythingintheworldbesides,instinctivelygraspedthepreciousdepositwhichCorneliushadintrustedtohercare.
Leavingthecell,theyoungmancouldstillseeintheconvulsivelyclinchedfingersofRosatheyellowishleaffromthatBibleonwhichCorneliusdeWitthadwithsuchdifficultyandpainwrittenthesefewlines,which,ifVanBaerlehadreadthem,wouldundoubtedlyhavebeenthesavingofamanandatulip.
