ThiswasVanBaerle’swholedefence;afterwhichthejudgesbegantodeliberateontheverdict.
Theyconsideredthateveryoffshootofcivildiscordismischievous,becauseitrevivesthecontestwhichitistheinterestofalltoputdown.
Oneofthem,whoborethecharacterofaprofoundobserver,laiddownashisopinionthatthisyoungman,sophlegmaticinappearance,mustinrealitybeverydangerous,asunderthisicyexteriorhewassuretoconcealanardentdesiretoavengehisfriends,theDeWitts.
Anotherobservedthattheloveoftulipsagreedperfectlywellwiththatofpolitics,andthatitwasprovedinhistorythatmanyverydangerousmenwereengagedingardening,justasifithadbeentheirprofession,whilstreallytheyoccupiedthemselveswithperfectlydifferentconcerns;witnessTarquintheElder,whogrewpoppiesatGabii,andtheGreatCondé,whowateredhiscarnationsatthedungeonofVincennesattheverymomentwhentheformermeditatedhisreturntoRome,andthelatterhisescapefromprison.
