Ilookedatthegrating.“It’sflimsy,”Isaid.“Wemightbendtwoofthebarsandcrawlthrough.”
Wewastedalittletimeinvaguediscussion.ThenItookoneofthebarsinbothhands,andgotmyfeetupagainsttherockuntiltheywerealmostonalevelwithmyhead,andsothrustagainstthebar.ItbentsosuddenlythatIalmostslipped.Iclamberedaboutandbenttheadjacentbarintheoppositedirection,andthentooktheluminousfungusfrommypocketanddroppeditdownthefissure.
“Don’tdoanythinghastily,”whisperedCavor,asItwistedmyselfupthroughtheopeningIhadenlarged.IhadaglimpseofbusyfiguresasIcamethroughthegrating,andimmediatelybentdown,sothattherimofthedepressioninwhichthegratinglayhidmefromtheireyes,andsolayflat,signallingadvicetoCavorashealsopreparedtocomethrough.Presentlyweweresidebysideinthedepression,peeringovertheedgeatthecavernanditsoccupants.
Itwasamuchlargercavernthanwehadsupposedfromourfirstglimpseofit,andwelookedupfromthelowestportionofitsslopingfloor.Itwidenedoutasitrecededfromus,anditsroofcamedownandhidtheremoterportionaltogether.
