           Ilostmytemperathispersistence,andsworetomyself.Foratimewehatedoneanotherinsilence.Idrummedwithmyfingersonthefloorbetweenmyknees,andgrittedthelinksofmyfetterstogether.PresentlyIwasforcedtotalkagain.

           “Theyarereasonablecreatures—theycanmakethingsanddothings.Thoselightswesaw...”

           Hestopped.Itwasclearhecouldmakenothingofit.

           Hestoppedirritatingly.

           “Yes?”

           “Isuppose,anyhow—onanyplanetwherethereisanintelligentanimal—itwillcarryitsbraincaseupward,andhavehands,andwalkerect.”

           “It’scooler.Andourvoicesaresomuchlouder.Thatfadedquality—ithasaltogethergone.Andthefeelinginone’searsandthroat.”

           “Theairisdenser.Wemustbesomedepths—amileeven,wemaybe—insidethemoon.”

           “Weneverthoughtofaworldinsidethemoon.”
