           Onthecontrary,theworkingoftheforemastsailsdemandsmuchgreaterproficiencyinseamanship.Infact,whenitisnecessarytosetthem,thesailorsmustclimbbytheriggingitmaybeintheforetop,itmaybeonthesparsofthetop-gallantmast,itmaybetothetopofthesaidmastandthat,aswellinlettingthemflyasindrawingthemintodiminishtheirsurfaceinreefingthem.Thencethenecessityofrunningoutonfoot-ropesmovableropesstretchedbelowtheyardsofworkingwithonehandwhileholdingonbytheotherperilousworkforanyonewhoisnotusedtoit.Theoscillationfromtherollingandpitchingoftheship,verymuchincreasedbythelengthofthelever,theflappingofthesailsunderastiffbreeze,haveoftensentamanoverboard.
