           Ontheotherhand,CaptainHulldidnotwishtoleavehisshipwithoutleavingonboardatleastonemanfromthecrew,inwhomhehadconfidence.Itwasnecessarytoprovideforalleventualities.

           NowCaptainHull,obligedtochoosestrongseamentomanthewhale-boat,wasforcedtoputonDickSandthecareofguardingthe"Pilgrim."

           "Dick,"saidhetohim,"Ishallchargeyoutoremainonboardduringmyabsence,whichIhopewillbeshort."

           "Well,sir,"repliedtheyoungnovice.

           DickSandwouldhavewishedtotakepartinthisfishing,whichhadagreatattractionforhim,butheunderstoodthat,foronereason,aman’sarmswereworthmorethanhisforserviceinawhale-boat,andthatforanother,healonecouldreplaceCaptainHull.Sohewassatisfied.Thewhale-boat’screwmustbecomposedofthefivemen,includingthemaster,Howik,whichformedthewholecrewofthe"Pilgrim."Thefoursailorsweregoingtotaketheirplacesattheoars,andHowikwouldholdthesternoar,whichservestoguideaboatofthiskind.
