November26,Sunday.—Thecuratepreachedaverygoodsermontoday—verygoodindeed.Hisappearanceisneversoimpressiveasourdearoldvicar’s,butIamboundtosayhissermonsaremuchmoreimpressive.Aratherannoyingincidentoccurred,ofwhichImustmakemention.Mrs.Fernlosse,whoisquiteagrandlady,livinginoneofthoselargehousesintheCamdenRoad,stoppedtospeaktomeafterchurch,whenwewereallcomingout.ImustsayIfeltflattered,forsheisthoughtagooddealof.Isupposesheknewmethroughseeingmesooftentakeroundtheplate,especiallyasshealwaysoccupiesthecornerseatofthepew.Sheisaveryinfluentiallady,andMayhavehadsomethingoftheutmostimportancetosay,butunfortunately,asshecommencedtospeakastronggustofwindcameandblewmyhatoffintothemiddleoftheroad.
Ihadtorunafterit,andhadthegreatestdifficultyinrecoveringit.WhenIhadsucceededindoingso,IfoundMrs.Fernlossehadwalkedonwithsomeswellfriends,andIfeltIcouldnotwellapproachhernow,especiallyasmyhatwassmotheredwithmud.IcannotsayhowdisappointedIfelt.
