DearCarrieremindedmethatwemarriedearly,and,withtheexceptionofafewtrivialmisunderstandings,wehadneverhadareallyseriousword.Icouldnothelpthinking(asItoldher)thathalfthepleasuresoflifewerederivedfromthelittlestrugglesandsmallprivationsthatonehadtoendureatthebeginningofone’smarriedlife.Suchstrugglesweregenerallyoccasionedbywantofmeans,andoftenhelpedtomakelovingcouplesstandtogetherallthefirmer.

Weallthreesatreadinginsilencetillten,whenCarrieandIrosetogotobed.CarriesaidtoLupin:“IhopeDaisyiswell?”
Lupin,withaforcedcarelessairthathemusthavepickedupfromthe“HollowayComedians,”replied:“Oh,Daisy?YoumeanMissMutlar.Idon’tknowwhethersheiswellornot,butpleasenevertomentionhernameagaininmypresence.”
