Thismorning,forsomeunaccountablereason,weweretalkingaboutballoons,andwewereasmerryaspossible;buttheconversationdriftedintofamilymatters,duringwhichCarrie,withouttheslightestreason,referredinthemostuncomplimentarymannertomypoorfather’specuniarytrouble.Iretortedbysayingthat“Pa,atallevents,wasagentleman,”whereuponCarrieburstoutcrying.Ipositivelycouldnoteatanybreakfast.
AttheofficeIwassentforbyMr.Perkupp,whosaidhewasverysorry,butIshouldhavetotakemyannualholidaysfromnextSaturday.Franchingcalledatofficeandaskedmetodineathisclub,“TheConstitutional.”Fearingdisagreeablesathomeafterthe“tiff”thismorning,IsentatelegramtoCarrie,tellingherIwasgoingouttodineandshewasnottositup.BoughtalittlesilverbangleforCarrie.
July31.—Carriewasverypleasedwiththebangle,whichIleftwithanaffectionatenoteonherdressing-tablelastnightbeforegoingtobed.ItoldCarrieweshouldhavetostartforourholidaynextSaturday.
