June4.—IntheeveningCarrieandIwentroundtoMr.andMrs.Cummings’tospendaquieteveningwiththem.Gowingwasthere,alsoMr.Stillbrook.Itwasquietbutpleasant.Mrs.Cummingssangfiveorsixsongs,“No,Sir,”and“TheGardenofSleep,”beingbestinmyhumblejudgment;butwhatpleasedmemostwastheduetshesangwithCarrie—classicalduet,too.Ithinkitiscalled,“Iwouldthatmylove!”Itwasbeautiful.IfCarriehadbeeninbettervoice,Idon’tthinkprofessionalscouldhavesungitbetter.Aftersupperwemadethemsingitagain.IneverlikedMr.StillbrooksincethewalkthatSundaytothe“CowandHedge,”butImustsayhesingscomic-songswell.Hissong:“Wedon’tWanttheoldmennow,”madeusshriekwithlaughter,especiallytheversereferringtoMr.Gladstone;buttherewasoneverseIthinkhemighthaveomitted,andIsaidso,butGowingthoughtitwasthebestofthelot.
