           April27.Paintedthebathred,andwasdelightedwiththeresult.SorrytosayCarriewasnot,infactwehadafewwordsaboutit.ShesaidIoughttohaveconsultedher,andshehadneverheardofsuchathingasabathbeingpaintedred.Ireplied:“It’smerelyamatteroftaste.”

           Fortunately,furtherargumentonthesubjectwasstoppedbyavoicesaying,“MayIcomein?”ItwasonlyCummings,whosaid,“Yourmaidopenedthedoor,andaskedmetoexcusehershowingmein,asshewaswringingoutsomesocks.”Iwasdelightedtoseehim,andsuggestedweshouldhaveagameofwhistwithadummy,andbywayofmerrimentsaid:“Youcanbethedummy.”Cummings(Ithoughtratherill-naturedly)replied:“Funnyasusual.”Hesaidhecouldn’tstop,heonlycalledtoleavemetheBicycleNews,ashehaddonewithit.

           Anotherringatthebell;itwasGowing,whosaidhe“mustapologiseforcomingsooften,andthatoneofthesedayswemustcomeroundtohim.”Isaid:“Averyextraordinarythinghasstruckme.”“Somethingfunny,asusual,”saidCummings.
