Shewastheirearliestvisitorintheirsettledlife;andCaptainWentworth,byputtingherinthewayofrecoveringherhusband’spropertyintheWestIndies,bywritingforher,actingforher,andseeingherthroughallthepettydifficultiesofthecasewiththeactivityandexertionofafearlessmanandadeterminedfriend,fullyrequitedtheserviceswhichshehadrendered,orevermeanttorender,tohiswife.
MrsSmith’senjoymentswerenotspoiledbythisimprovementofincome,withsomeimprovementofhealth,andtheacquisitionofsuchfriendstobeoftenwith,forhercheerfulnessandmentalalacritydidnotfailher;andwhiletheseprimesuppliesofgoodremained,shemighthavebiddefianceeventogreateraccessionsofworldlyprosperity.Shemighthavebeenabsolutelyrichandperfectlyhealthy,andyetbehappy.Herspringoffelicitywasintheglowofherspirits,asherfriendAnne’swasinthewarmthofherheart.Annewastendernessitself,andshehadthefullworthofitinCaptainWentworth’saffection.Hisprofessionwasallthatcouldevermakeherfriendswishthattendernessless,thedreadofafuturewarallthatcoulddimhersunshine.Shegloriedinbeingasailor’swife,butshemustpaythetaxofquickalarmforbelongingtothatprofessionwhichis,ifpossible,moredistinguishedinitsdomesticvirtuesthaninitsnationalimportance.
