WhileAdmiralCroftwastakingthiswalkwithAnne,andexpressinghiswishofgettingCaptainWentworthtoBath,CaptainWentworthwasalreadyonhiswaythither.BeforeMrsCrofthadwritten,hewasarrived,andtheverynexttimeAnnewalkedout,shesawhim.
MrElliotwasattendinghistwocousinsandMrsClay.TheywereinMilsomStreet.Itbegantorain,notmuch,butenoughtomakeshelterdesirableforwomen,andquiteenoughtomakeitverydesirableforMissElliottohavetheadvantageofbeingconveyedhomeinLadyDalrymple’scarriage,whichwasseenwaitingatalittledistance;she,Anne,andMrsClay,therefore,turnedintoMolland’s,whileMrElliotsteppedtoLadyDalrymple,torequestherassistance.Hesoonjoinedthemagain,successful,ofcourse;LadyDalrymplewouldbemosthappytotakethemhome,andwouldcallfortheminafewminutes.
Herladyship’scarriagewasabarouche,anddidnotholdmorethanfourwithanycomfort.MissCarteretwaswithhermother;consequentlyitwasnotreasonabletoexpectaccommodationforallthethreeCamdenPlaceladies.TherecouldbenodoubtastoMissElliot.Whoeversufferedinconvenience,shemustsuffernone,butitoccupiedalittletimetosettlethepointofcivilitybetweentheothertwo.Therainwasameretrifle,andAnnewasmostsincereinpreferringawalkwithMrElliot.
