SirWalterElliot,ofKellynchHall,inSomersetshire,wasamanwho,forhisownamusement,nevertookupanybookbuttheBaronetage;therehefoundoccupationforanidlehour,andconsolationinadistressedone;therehisfacultieswererousedintoadmirationandrespect,bycontemplatingthelimitedremnantoftheearliestpatents;thereanyunwelcomesensations,arisingfromdomesticaffairschangednaturallyintopityandcontemptasheturnedoverthealmostendlesscreationsofthelastcentury;andthere,ifeveryotherleafwerepowerless,hecouldreadhisownhistorywithaninterestwhichneverfailed.Thiswasthepageatwhichthefavouritevolumealwaysopened:

Preciselysuchhadtheparagraphoriginallystoodfromtheprinter’shands;butSirWalterhadimproveditbyadding,fortheinformationofhimselfandhisfamily,thesewords,afterthedateofMary’sbirth—“Married,December16,1810,Charles,sonandheirofCharlesMusgrove,Esq.ofUppercross,inthecountyofSomerset,”andbyinsertingmostaccuratelythedayofthemonthonwhichhehadlosthiswife.
