Sheonlyrousedherselffromthebroodingsofthisrestlessagitation,toletMrsClayknowthatshehadbeenseenwithMrElliotthreehoursafterhisbeingsupposedtobeoutofBath,forhavingwatchedinvainforsomeintimationoftheinterviewfromtheladyherself,shedeterminedtomentionit,anditseemedtohertherewasguiltinMrsClay’sfaceasshelistened.Itwastransient:clearedawayinaninstant;butAnnecouldimagineshereadtheretheconsciousnessofhaving,bysomecomplicationofmutualtrick,orsomeoverbearingauthorityofhis,beenobligedtoattend(perhapsforhalfanhour)tohislecturesandrestrictionsonherdesignsonSirWalter.Sheexclaimed,however,withaverytolerableimitationofnature:—
“Oh!dear!verytrue.Onlythink,MissElliot,tomygreatsurpriseImetwithMrElliotinBathStreet.Iwasnevermoreastonished.HeturnedbackandwalkedwithmetothePumpYard.HehadbeenpreventedsettingoffforThornberry,butIreallyforgetbywhat;forIwasinahurry,andcouldnotmuchattend,andIcanonlyanswerforhisbeingdeterminednottobedelayedinhisreturn.Hewantedtoknowhowearlyhemightbeadmittedto-morrow.Hewasfullof‘to-morrow,’anditisveryevidentthatIhavebeenfullofittoo,eversinceIenteredthehouse,andlearnttheextensionofyourplanandallthathadhappened,ormyseeinghimcouldneverhavegonesoentirelyoutofmyhead.”
