CaptainBenwickhadsometimeagobeenfirstlieutenantoftheLaconia;andtheaccountwhichCaptainWentworthhadgivenofhim,onhisreturnfromLymebefore,hiswarmpraiseofhimasanexcellentyoungmanandanofficer,whomhehadalwaysvaluedhighly,whichmusthavestampedhimwellintheesteemofeverylistener,hadbeenfollowedbyalittlehistoryofhisprivatelife,whichrenderedhimperfectlyinterestingintheeyesofalltheladies.HehadbeenengagedtoCaptainHarville’ssister,andwasnowmourningherloss.Theyhadbeenayearortwowaitingforfortuneandpromotion.Fortunecame,hisprize-moneyaslieutenantbeinggreat;promotion,too,cameatlast;butFannyHarvilledidnotlivetoknowit.Shehaddiedtheprecedingsummerwhilehewasatsea.CaptainWentworthbelieveditimpossibleformantobemoreattachedtowomanthanpoorBenwickhadbeentoFannyHarville,ortobemoredeeplyafflictedunderthedreadfulchange.Heconsideredhisdispositionasofthesortwhichmustsufferheavily,unitingverystrongfeelingswithquiet,serious,andretiringmanners,andadecidedtasteforreading,andsedentarypursuits.
