AssoonastheyweredowntheywentonagainwithGollumleading,eastwards,upthedarkslopingland.Theycouldseelittle,forthenightwasnowsodeepthattheywerehardlyawareofthestemsoftreesbeforetheystumbledagainstthem.Thegroundbecamemorebrokenandwalkingwasmoredifficult,butGollumseemedinnowaytroubled.Heledthemthroughthicketsandwastesofbrambles;sometimesroundthelipofadeepcleftordarkpit,sometimesdownintoblackbush-shroudedhollowsandoutagain;butifevertheywentalittledownward,alwaysthefurtherslopewaslongerandsteeper.Theywereclimbingsteadily.Attheirfirsthalttheylookedback,andtheycoulddimlyperceivetheroofsoftheforesttheyhadleftbehindlyinglikeavastdenseshadow,adarkernightunderthedarkblanksky.ThereseemedtobeagreatblacknessloomingslowlyoutoftheEast,eatingupthefaintblurredstars.Laterthesinkingmoonescapedfromthepursuingcloud,butitwasringedallaboutwithasicklyyellowglare.
AtlastGollumturnedtothehobbits.’Daysoon,’hesaid.’Hobbitsmusthurry.Notsafetostayintheopenintheseplaces.Makehaste!’
