Gollumreluctantlyagreedtothis,andheturnedbacktowardsthetrees,workingeastwardforawhilealongthestragglingedgesofthewood.Hewouldnotrestonthegroundsoneartheevilroad,andaftersomedebatetheyallclimbedupintothecrotchofalargeholm-oak,whosethickbranchesspringingtogetherfromthetrunkmadeagoodhiding-placeandafairlycomfortablerefuge.Nightfellanditgrewaltogetherdarkunderthecanopyofthetree.FrodoandSamdrankalittlewaterandatesomebreadanddriedfruit,butGollumatoncecurledupandwenttosleep.Thehobbitsdidnotshuttheireyes.
ItmusthavebeenalittleaftermidnightwhenGollumwokeup:suddenlytheywereawareofhispaleeyesunliddedgleamingatthem.Helistenedandsniffed,whichseemed,astheyhadnoticedbefore,hisusualmethodofdiscoveringthetimeofnight.
