Thekingandallhiscompanysatsilentontheirhorses,marvelling,perceivingthatthepowerofSarumanwasoverthrown;buthowtheycouldnotguess.Andnowtheyturnedtheireyestowardsthearchwayandtheruinedgates.Theretheysawclosebesidethemagreatrubble-heap;andsuddenlytheywereawareoftwosmallfigureslyingonitattheirease,grey-clad,hardlytobeseenamongthestones.Therewerebottlesandbowlsandplatterslaidbesidethem,asiftheyhadjusteatenwell,andnowrestedfromtheirlabour.Oneseemedasleep;theother,withcrossedlegsandarmsbehindhishead,leanedbackagainstabrokenrockandsentfromhismouthlongwispsandlittleringsofthinbluesmoke.
ForamomentThéodenandÉomerandallhismenstaredattheminwonder.AmidallthewreckofIsengardthisseemedtothemthestrangestsight.Butbeforethekingcouldspeak,thesmallsmoke-breathingfigurebecamesuddenlyawareofthem,astheysattheresilentontheedgeofthemist.Hesprangtohisfeet.Ayoungmanhelooked,orlikeone,thoughnotmuchmorethanhalfamaninheight;hisheadofbrowncurlinghairwasuncovered,buthewascladinatravel-stainedcloakofthesamehueandshapeasthecompanionsofGandalfhadwornwhentheyrodetoEdoras.Hebowedverylow.puttinghishanduponhisbreast.Then,seemingnottoobservethewizardandhisfriends,heturnedtoÉomerandtheking.
