Itwasstainedaswithdriedblood;andlookingclosertheyperceivedthatitsnailswerered.UnheedingGandalfrodeonintothemist,andreluctantlytheyfollowedhim.Allaboutthemnow,asiftherehadbeenasuddenflood.widepoolsofwaterlaybesidetheroad,fillingthehollows.andrillswenttricklingdownamongthestones.
AtlastGandalfhaltedandbeckonedtothem;andtheycame,andsawthatbeyondhimthemistshadcleared,andapalesunlightshone.Thehourofnoonhadpassed.TheywerecometothedoorsofIsengard.
Butthedoorslayhurledandtwistedontheground.Andallabout,stone,crackedandsplinteredintocountlessjaggedshards,wasscatteredfarandwide,orpiledinruinousheaps.Thegreatarchstillstood,butitopenednowuponarooflesschasm:thetunnelwaslaidbare.andthroughthecliff-likewallsoneithersidegreatrentsandbreacheshadbeentorn;theirtowerswerebeatenintodust.IftheGreatSeahadriseninwrathandfallenonthehillswithstorm.itcouldhaveworkednogreaterruin.
Theringbeyondwasfilledwithsteamingwater:abubblingcauldron,inwhichthereheavedandfloatedawreckageofbeamsandspars,chestsandcasksandbrokengear.Twistedandleaningpillarsrearedtheirsplinteredstemsabovetheflood.butalltheroadsweredrowned.Faroff,itseemed,halfveiledinwindingcloud,thereloomedtheislandrock.Stilldarkandtall,unbrokenbythestorm,thetowerofOrthancstood.Palewaterslappedaboutitsfeet.
