           "Who’sthere?"Thomasyelledout,atingleoffearshootingacrosshisshoulders.Hisvoicebouncedoffthecanopyofleavesabovehim,echoingthroughtheair.Hestayedfrozen,rootedtothespotasallgrewsilent,exceptforthewhistlingsongofafewbirdsinthedistance.Butnooneansweredhiscall.Nordidhehearanymoresoundsfromthatdirection.

           Withoutreallythinkingitthrough,Thomasheadedtowardthenoisehe’dheard.Notbotheringtohidehisprogress,hepushedasidebranchesashewalked,lettingthemwhipbacktopositionwhenhepassed.Hesquinted,willedhiseyestoworkinthegrowingdarkness,wishinghehadaflashlight.Hethoughtaboutflashlightsandhismemory.Onceagain,herememberedatangiblethingfromhispast,butcouldn’tassignittoanyspecifictimeorplace,couldn’tassociateitwithanyotherpersonorevent.Frustrating.

           "Anybodythere?"heaskedagain,feelingalittlecalmersincethenoisehadn’trepeated.Itwasprobablyjustananimal,maybeanotherbeetleblade.Justincase,hecalledout,"It’sme,Thomas.Thenewguy.Well,second-newestguy."

           Hewincedandshookhishead,hopingnowthatnoonewasthere.Hesoundedlikeacompleteidiot.

           Hesteppedaroundalargeoakandpulledupshort.Anicyshiverrandownhisback.He’dreachedthegraveyard.

           Theclearingwassmall,maybethirtysquarefeet,andcoveredwithathicklayerofleafyweedsgrowingclosetotheground.
