           Thehelpinghandsdidn’tstopswarmingaroundhimuntilThomasstoodupstraightandhadthedustbrushedfromhisshirtandpants.Stilldazzledbythelight,hestaggeredabit.Hewasconsumedwithcuriositybutstillfelttooilltolookcloselyathissurroundings.Hisnewcompanionssaidnothingasheswiveledhisheadaround,tryingtotakeitallin.

           Asherotatedinaslowcircle,theotherkidssnickeredandstared;somereachedoutandpokedhimwithafinger.Therehadtobeatleastfiftyofthem,theirclothessmudgedandsweatyasifthey’dbeenhardatwork,allshapesandsizesandraces,theirhairofvaryinglengths.Thomassuddenlyfeltdizzy,hiseyesflickeringbetweentheboysandthebizarreplaceinwhichhe’dfoundhimself.

           Theystoodinavastcourtyardseveraltimesthesizeofafootballfield,surroundedbyfourenormouswallsmadeofgraystoneandcoveredinspotswiththickivy.Thewallshadtobehundredsoffeethighandformedaperfectsquarearoundthem,eachsidesplitintheexactmiddlebyanopeningastallasthewallsthemselvesthat,fromwhatThomascouldsee,ledtopassagesandlongcorridorsbeyond.

           "LookattheGreenbean,"ascratchyvoicesaid;Thomascouldn’tseewhoitcamefrom."Gonnabreakhisshuckneckcheckin’outthenewdigs."Severalboyslaughed.

           "Shutyourhole,Gally,"adeepervoiceresponded.

           Thomasfocusedbackinonthedozensofstrangersaroundhim.Heknewhemustlookoutofithefeltlikehe’dbeendrugged.
